Yoga is more than asana

An individual is sat on a yoga mat, eyes closed and looking calm.

As I’m introducing the eight limbs of yoga, you can probably see why the third limb, Asana (postures), is the limb that’s most often portrayed and talked about, especially on social media.

First, it is ideal for images as it’s purely physical – how do you take photographs of concentration or breath work?

Second, it’s easier to track progress – you notice if you can start to hold postures for longer but do you notice subtle changes in your concentration and mindset?

And third, it’s much easier to describe for those new to the practice. Even now, I feel like I could discuss asana in far more depth than any of the other limbs.

In what ways can we use social media to show that there is more to yoga than asana?
